Guess who period-shamed her? Wait for it... Her class teacher!
She was allegedly humiliated in front of the whole class. The 14-year old Kenyan schoolgirl became so distraught after the ordeal that she hanged herself moments after getting back home from school.
According to her mother, a teacher had called her 'dirty' for soiling her uniform and ordered her to leave the class in Kabiangek, west of the capital of Nairobi.
'She had nothing to use as a pad. When the blood stained her clothes, she was told to leave the classroom and stand outside', the mother was quoted as saying in Kenya media.
This is distressing to read. What manner of teacher is this! An average 14-year old girl is deeply self-conscious. They are blossoming into puberty at this stage and watch helplessly as their bodies undergo all manner of changes. This is even more so when they are not properly guided and educated on how to handle these changes.
Imagine a young girl lost in this maze having to go through this extremely humiliating and embarassing experience. Even when grown ups suffer 'period accidents', they quickly look for ways to handle the situation away from prying eyes as they can manage.
What do you think should be done to this teacher if the fellow is indeed culpable as alleged?
Wow! What a tragic loss. How is wish people can be more careful about the way they talk and address issues -especially addressing this generaton-Y requires to be thoughtful. How wrong words can be deadlier than bullets of the power guns. This generation-Y requires that we show understanding, empathy and motivating than ash words that could shame them before peers.
